€130,000 Vanishes From a Businessman’s Apartment in Bansko

Imagine that you have some money stashed in your apartment, but when you go to get it (or check on it), it’s not there. Poof, it’s gone.

That’s what happened to a businessman this week who reported the theft of over 130,000 Euros from his apartment in Bansko.

The man — said to be “…an individual who is engaged in commercial activity on the territory of Bansko”, which could actually be anything, really, couldn’t it? — reported the theft to the police, who launched an investigation.

It's potentially going to be hard to investigate, though, considering there are no signs of forced entry: no locks or windows/doors broken, and no sign of a break-in. There was no actual robbery either (which would involve violence), despite earlier reports suggesting one.

This raises the question of whether this was an inside job, which seems most likely. Was the cash undeclared? Possibly, but if you read the article from Struma (shared to the notice board), it would seem the cash was from the recent sale of a property. All little snippets of information that if not in the actual story you read can lead to an abundance of incorrect conclusions.

Are people being given change in Leva and not Euro? (Euro change is required by law during the period of dual circulation).

Well, I’ve been spending my Leva cash on purpose to see what change I’m given, and it’s been consistent: at 92% of businesses (17 in total), I have been given change back in Leva.

Does it matter how much I spent?
Nope.
If I handed over a 10, 20, 50 or 100 BGN note, the change came back in Leva.
When I ask them why they gave me change in Leva, every one of them just shrugged and either muttered something or said “you paid in Leva”. Good to see companies of all sizes not following the law. 🤦

I’ve spoken to quite a few businesses in town, and most are taking quite a lot of money in Leva still, so it looks like lots of people still have their rainy day funds under their mattresses 😂

Remember: you have until midnight on Saturday to spend any Leva in cash at a business (shop, bar, restaurant, etc). After this time, any business can refuse payment in BGN and insist on payment in EUR.
