Bansko Municipality Taking Action on The Uncontrolled Movement of Farm Animals & Warning About The Registration of Shepherd Dogs

In a recent meeting with Bansko Municipality and representatives from various government agencies in the Blageovgrad region, the main topic of discussion was the ongoing issue of farm animals wandering along sections of roads without being accompanied by their owners.

If you’ve driven around Bulgaria, you know this isn’t just a problem locally, but happens across many different municipalities throughout the country. During the meeting, it was emphasised that the number of inspections on farm animals would be increased to prevent road incidents that have seen a loss of human life, serious injuries to animals, and the destruction of farm property.

Interestingly, a firm point was made that dogs accompanying herds from farms must be registered with the local municipality and that administrative fines may be used if an owner is found to be breaking the law. While this point isn’t something new, it is important that the local municipality has made a point about it. With an increase in aggressive shepherd dogs against visitors and locals in the area recently (with some people being confused that these incidents were with street dogs), it’s a positive note that the municipality is announcing action. More info.

As a reminder: if you come across one of these agressive shepherd dogs, note down the location and time where it happened and report it to both the police and the municipality. Incidents (aggression/attacks, etc) with these types of dogs often go unchecked, so the more they’re reported to the relevant authorities, the better the situation will be.

Before You Go…

We’re finishing the last weekend before the storm comes: expect the top end of town (around the gondola) to be busy over the next four weeks (until the 10th of March).

Lots of different countries have school holidays over the next few weeks. The UK has it all separated out (as usual) over the next three weeks, with the first half-term starting on Friday (14th).

So, it's best to book a table if you’re heading out for dinner up the hill past Pirin 75 over the next few weeks.

If you want to have a great meal, then it’s worth heading to Smokey Mountain or The Chef’s House (both are a few minutes walk from the Ginger traffic lights), or head down the hill to Banski Audit, Baryokova Tavern, Dedo Pene, Bai Kotse, or Chevermeto: all great places to dine.
