German Orchestra Performs on
Pirin Mountains Above Bansko

It’s been a busy week here in Bansko: celebrating Liberation Day, International Women’s Day & Todorov Day on Saturday, and an orchestra performing on Todorka Peak.

The Aramis Orchestra from the International Cultural Center Mannheim in Germany headed up the mountain in Bansko to perform a concert in an unusual location on Mount Todorka. The orchestra is made up of Bulgarians and Germans who performed classical music that spread across the mountain range and, apparently, into the town.

The concert amongst the snowy rocks was meant to highlight the continued protection of the planet through music.

However, a rumour is circulating that the grand piano and the orchestra’s musical instruments were all props (aka fake) being used to film a promotional video on the mountain, with the music being dubbed in on the video at a later stage (the dubbing part is completely normal). Who knows…

Public Discussion on Small Airport in Bansko
This week, there was a public discussion about an airport in Bansko that would support small aircraft and helicopters (at 800 metres long, Ryanair won’t be using it: it’ll be too short). This is in its initial planning phase, and the land allocated for it is behind the train station heading towards Banya (pin location here). I suppose it will probably help the medical helicopters (Red Angels) with more places to land, but I’m not sure whether it will improve general tourism numbers. More info.

Friday Was a Day For Car Crashes
Friday this week (7th) seemed to be the day for car crashes in and around Bansko. In the afternoon, around 2.30pm, there was a multiple-vehicle collision the other side of Razlog (on the way to Blageovgrad) with one person injured. Around 6pm there was another multiple-vehicle collision near the Gazprom petrol station just outside Bansko. The road was fully closed and at least four ambulances were in attendance. There were no fatalities, but a number of people received treatment for minor injuries at Razlog Hospital.

Photo of the Week

A sunny & busy Pirin Street with snow loss on the peaks.

It’s been a sunny (and warm) week in Bansko, with town temperatures getting as high as 19°C. Up the mountain? The conditions are epic.

Before You Go…

If you’re in town at the moment, then from tomorrow, you’ll see it a bit quieter than the usual hussle and bussle of recent weeks. The dynamic of people visiting Bansko will change too: a switch from families with children to adults wanting a ski break.

That will mean the slopes should see fewer people going up and next to no gondola queue discussion on the different Facebook groups 🥳 The higher winds towards the later parts of the week might also put off some skiers/boarders heading up the mountain (be prepared for some slopes/lifts being temporarily closed too).

It will also mean no need for a reservation for dinner plans apart from the usual popular places at the weekend: FiveM, Alpen, and The House.
