Celebrating Slavic Literacy and Bulgarian Culture

Yesterday (Saturday 24th), Bansko celebrated the Bulgarian alphabet, culture, education, Slavic literature, and the Holy Brothers Cyril & Methodius.
Language is an important aspect of our everyday lives, and Bulgarians have a significant pride in their language, the Cyrillic alphabet, and literature. In his speech, the mayor of Bansko emphasized “…the significance of this day for the national well-being of Bulgarians…” and called on contemporary generations to preserve and pass on the spiritual heritage of Bansko.
In the town square, celebrations included songs, dancing, and recitations dedicated to Bulgarian literacy, education and culture. See some photos here.
Local Charity — Sunflower

The Sunflower organisation continuously supports the four safety homes in Bansko, the dementia home in Mesta, and the Sdravetz Centre for people with special needs. They are currently focusing support for 20-25 elderly vulnerable adults living on their own and in need of upgrades, food and warmth.

Sofia University Identifies Cause of Intestinal Epidemic in Bansko
A few weeks ago (issue #40), a rumour was circulating that the tap water in town was causing many people to become sick. The tap water was tested and verified to be safe, but the local municipality asked a group of microbiologists from Sofia University to investigate. They found the presence of noroviruses in wastewater samples, which means a virus was causing the sickness, not the tap water. Read more [translation required].

Before You Go…
It’s felt quiet and a little busy in town this week, with the usual quiet streets during the week and many tourists descending on the town for the holiday weekend (tomorrow is a non-working day). Such a shame we’ve had rain all day today from 2am this morning 😆
In just over a few weeks’ time, we’ll be coming up on a whole year of the Bansko Buzz going out every Sunday (😲), so feel free to reply to this email with suggestions on how you think we should celebrate.
