A man missing since 2008 and pronounced dead in 2013 was found camping in the Pirin Mountains

t

This week, the Pirin National Park authority was tipped off about a man supposedly living in a tent on the mountain. Camping in the national park is prohibited, so the organisation wanted to issue him a fine and ask him to leave.

However, he became aggressive when confronted, and so the police were called. After being checked in the system by the police, he was arrested as the person he claimed to be had a death certificate issued for him in 2013. It turns out that he was a 56-year-old man from Ruse (in the north of the country) who went missing in 2008 and was declared dead by the authorities in 2013.

The man told investigators that he had gone over the border and lived in Greece, and worked on a farm for 13 years. After the farmer died, he left and decided to camp in the mountains above Bulgaria and Greece. He’s reported to have been stopped on more than one occasion by Border Police and issued administrative fines for not holding a valid ID card. It appears that the man doesn’t want to return to his home town, doesn’t want to speak to his family, and said that he will continue to evade authorities (he was later released by the police).

People have been speculating who this individual was, and it did get me thinking about the stories I’ve heard about people living rough in Bansko. There was a guy called Gavin from the UK who used to camp near the ski road, and a European guy who used to camp up in the woods above town. No one seems to have seen either of these individuals for a while, though (over a year).

Before You Go…

The most popular question I’ve been asked this week is “How do you know that?”

It usually comes from correcting incorrect information that someone has about a business or person in Bansko.

My usual answer? Because they told me. I tend to see lots of people in Bansko when I’m out and about in town and we’ll have a chat. And, people tend to like to tell me things 🤷

Also, if you have an event on Facebook and you see me hit “interested”, this doesn’t mean I’ll be attending the event. I usually hit interested so that it gets added to my events list, which helps me publish the events section in the Buzz every week. It doesn’t necessarily mean I’m going. I’ve had a few discussions lately about it and wanted to clear up any confusion.
