Red Angel Lands as Technical Difficulties Stop It Reaching Bansko on Crucial Rescue Mission

Earlier this week, a 27-year-old Irish man fell 600 metres when he slipped while taking photos. The emergency medical helicopter was called on to airlift him off the mountain. However, the aircraft declared an emergency not long into its flight (around 10 minutes). It initially landed in the Samokov area (not far from Borovets) until it later returned to base in Sofia, citing a technical fault.

Unfortunately, the man died of his injuries after the local mountain rescue team took him to Razlog Hospital.

There are questions about why the Red Angel had technical issues, meaning it wasn’t fit to fly (read more), why the military helicopter wasn’t dispatched instead, and where are the two additional medical helicopters that were supposed to be delivered already? Read more.

In other news, a man in his 50s or 60s of unknown nationality died of a suspected heart attack on slope 6 and was rescued by the Bansko mountain rescue team. Read more.

For both incidents (and many minor ones where the outcome isn't so tragic), the local Mountain Rescue Service is always on hand to respond when called upon. They rely on donations and are mostly made up of volunteers. Feel free to send them a donation. If you ever need them on the mountain, call 112.

Winter sports come with inherent risks, and while these tragedies are devastating for the families and friends affected, the number of fatalities so far is in line with previous years.

Regular Municipality Meeting
At the recent regular municipality meeting, a few topics were discussed about local issues. One of them was an adoption programme to reduce the population of stray animals and control the breeding of domestic cats and dogs in Bansko. It’ll be interesting to see if/how they’ll do this, as one would assume they’ll use the same powers they’ve had for years. Also discussed were the construction of some new bike lanes in town and funding for the Special Winter Olympics in Italy. More info.

Duck Rustica at The Alpen Restaurant.

Before You Go…

The Alpen, the new Italian restaurant in Bansko, is rather good. You can see a photo above of the Duck Rustica: slow-roasted duck leg with risotto, fresh chilli, and poached egg.

They have a varied menu that includes the usual carbonara and spag bol, as well as some different salads and well-cooked dishes that offer a different take on Italian food (you’ll see what I mean when you go, it’s kinda de-constructed).

One thing I have noticed there is that they know how to cook. I know, I know, people say that about lots of places, but they actually know how to cook a poached egg without any of that gunky white stuff floating around (many places in Bansko can’t poach an egg, even the “better” places: Skabrin I’m looking at you). All of the dishes are seasoned well and have the right flavour balance combinations. Such a refreshing change.

The service? On point. There are a few niggles that they want to work out, but they’re all dressed well, attentive, get your order correct, and are professional in what they do. It’s definitely one to visit. See their Facebook page for more info.

Oh, and it’s not to be confused with the new fondue restaurant called Alpine that’s down at Lucky Bansko at the bottom end of town.
