A prestigious alpine competition took place in Italy recently. The Pinocchio Sugli Sci Race has been running for 43 years. Yulen Ski Club participant Lilia Hadzhistoyanova was the first Bulgarian to win gold: she won first place in the U14 Slalom, surpassing the efforts of participants from Austria and Italy.
This is one of the strongest competitions in the FIS calendar for young people, and Lilia’s victory is significant for both Bulgaria and Bansko.

It’s great to see young people representing Bansko (and Bulgaria) doing so well in international competitions, especially when the local municipality puts in significant effort and financial help for these young athletes.

With Ulen increasing their prices this year by over 13% and lots of items increasing in the supermarket over the past 6-12 months, I’m not too convinced about Bulgaria's 3.7% published inflation rate. There are roadworks near Gradevo village on the way to Simitli/Blageovgrad. That means there will be delays if you’re driving from Bansko to there or to Bansko (coming from Sofia? You need to go through this area). Important: If you’re driving to Bansko on any Friday in April after 3pm, or from Bansko any Sunday in April before 7pm, expect significant delays (around 1 hour or more).

Before You Go…
While it has felt quieter in Bansko this past week, and a few more places have closed down, we’ve still got two more busy weekends in town: next weekend is the last of the winter season, and the weekend after is Easter weekend.
Expect weekdays to be quiet over the next few weeks and weekends to be busier with tourists coming to town from Bulgaria, neighbouring countries, and further afield.
Keep an eye on the Bansko Notice Board Facebook group for the official events running over the Easter period. Let’s hope it doesn’t stay cold and windy 🤞.
