Baba Marta: Bidding Farewell To Winter And Welcoming The Spring

Baba Marta is a centuries-old tradition where Bulgarians bid farewell to the winter and welcome the spring. Warm, sunny days are coming.
Wearing and giving martenitsas usually happens on or just after the 1st day of March (so this coming weekend), where people give friends and family members a martenitsa, which is a decorative red and white twisted thread that helps protect the wearer against evil spirits and is said to bring them luck & happiness.
The martenitsa is worn on the wrist as a bracelet or on clothes and is usually given to friends and family members. You'll see many different designs in the shops around Bansko, and lots of people tend to choose a specific design that means something to the person who will wear it. The act of giving the martenitsa is to bring the wearer luck and happiness.
These martenistas are worn continuously until the first sign of spring, which usually involves seeing a stork, a swallow or a blossoming tree. People will then tie their martenitsa to the blossoming tree and thus pass on their good health and luck to the tree.

Some people have recently asked me if the new member announcements each week are the latest members to the BNB group: they are (the FB system refreshes them each week). The Bansko Notice Board Facebook group is Bansko's most active English-speaking group, hence the increase in new members every week.

Promoting Bansko As a Year-round Resort
Different representatives attended a two-day forum, "Brand Bulgaria - Hospitality For Four Seasons," recently. Before You Go…
It looks like there has been an increase in “disappearing” (aka theft of) skis and snowboards on the mountain and around town this season.
As always, keep an eye on your stuff, and if you can’t, get a small bike lock to secure your board or skis if you’re alone, or cross-store the skis with friends on the racks.
Over the last few weeks, it hasn’t been just rental skis and boards going missing; private ones are simply disappearing.
Now, while we don’t want to jump to conclusions all of the time, it’s happening too often for it simply to be people mistakenly taking other people’s skis and boards with them and heading back to the hire shop. If this happens to you, report it to both Ulen (the operator of the resort) at the gondola and the police station in town. The increase in police reports will filter back to the municipality who will put pressure on Ulen to take action.
Once ski season is finished, it looks like it’s just back to some petty theft and bicycles being nicked around town 🤞.
